Chicago PD star Marina Squerciati has hinted at what could come next for her character Kim Burgess after her recent traumatic experience.

Questions have been raised about Burgess' future with the Intelligence Unit after surviving a brutal attack that left her in a critical condition.

In this week's episode 'Rage', the character is still recovering, with her colleagues keen to have her back despite her not feeling ready to return.

"I don't think she really knows yet what she is going to do," Squerciati told TVLine of her possible future this season.

She continued: "I feel like people get the flu and are out of work longer than that, and she was brutally assaulted and shot twice.

"I think it's a matter of Ruzek trying to give her the space she needs, but ultimately not giving her the time she needs to heal."

While we know that the man who abducted her, Roy, is now dead, Burgess still believes that he's alive, with the latest episode taking a look at her mental state in the aftermath of her horrific experience.

"I love that in this episode, they let me carry out that pain, that mental anguish and that physical anguish and really work through it… that I wasn't Wonder Woman the next episode," Squerciati added.

Meanwhile, earlier this year Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas expressed hope for a big crossover with Chicago PD and Chicago Med, saying: "We've already started talking about ideas for it and to do one in the vein of 'Infection', where it was three big episodes with all three shows represented in all three hours."

Chicago PD airs on NBC in the US, and on Universal, 5USA and Sky Witness in the UK.
