CBS 2 Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist has the 5 p.m. forecast for Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
IRIKA SARGENT: Now a live look outside. Another chilly night ahead. Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist is here tracking lows in the 30s. And Mary Kay, I almost went out without a jacket.
MARY KAY KLEIST: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Not today, Irika. Yes, we were stuck in the 40s and most places saw some 50 South of I80. But we could have a few sprinkles this evening and tonight. We stay below average and the temperature department from tomorrow all the way through the weekend. We add to that a lake breeze. That water temperature is hovering around 50 degrees. And I'm thinking that shorefront temperatures for Thursday through Sunday will be in the upper 40s only, so we're going to struggle. Today, we hit 49. We're about 10 degrees colder than we should be. 48 is where we stand.
Sun goes down at 7:32 PM. And through sunset, we could have a sprinkle of rain, otherwise we see cloudy skies. We see temperatures at 50 degrees in Joliet, but down to 44 in Waukegan. And it's 47 right now in Aurora. And winds are continuing to gust to 25 miles per hour in Morris and Ottawa. 23 mile per hour winds in Kankakee. And winds up to 18 miles per hour in Waukegan. So we're watching low pressure here just to the north of us. And it has light right now for the Twin Cities, Rhinelander, Green Bay. Some of that energy is trying to slide south.
What we're getting from it is a cloud bank. You've seen that develop throughout the day. And we could squeeze out a sprinkle of rain here this evening. So as we go through time, our models aren't that impressed with it, but we still could have a sprinkle of rain. And then we start some clearing in the northwest suburbs at 10:00 PM. But then the clouds want to come back toward morning. Lows will dip into the 30s for a moment. And then we'll push to the low 40s for the morning rush. And in the afternoon, a sun-cloud mix, a northwest wind, and then a high temperature in the 50s for us. And then tomorrow evening though looks pretty quiet.
So low temperatures tonight. 34 in DeKalb. We had patchy frost out here last night. 37 in McKenry. 36 tonight in Waukegan. 34 degrees in La Porte. And then high temperatures tomorrow. That cooling around the lake. I mentioned the west and northwest winds tomorrow. That's going to create Gary some lakefront cooling, 48 there. 48 in La Porte. 50 in Valparaiso. But 55 in DeKalb. And maybe up to 59 degrees for you in Joliet. So a sun-cloud mix, winds out of the northwest, and temperatures slightly below average for us. So we are seeing cooler than normal.
We are going to have it in the 40s along the lakefront here as we step into the weekend. Nice to see a lot of sun though, on your Friday. But see how our temperature should be at 58 degrees. We'll get there eventually on Monday, just for one day, before another system really pushes some cool air in. The outlook from the Climate Prediction Center next week puts the bull's eye of colder than normal temperatures right over our region. So that front that comes through Monday night to Tuesday morning could actually bring us a few flurries. So tomorrow, partly cloudy skies, Irika, and a high of 53.
IRIKA SARGENT: Of course, it would be right over us.
MARY KAY KLEIST: I know.
IRIKA SARGENT: Yeah. Thank you, Mary Kay.
