Chick-fil-A has fulfilled a promise it made in 2014: no more food with antibiotics—not at all, not even a little bit.

A 2017 survey done by Eat This, Not That! gave Panera and Chipotle an A rating, Chipotle for its antibiotic-free chicken and beef and Panera for its antibiotic-free chicken and vow to remove 150 artificial ingredients from its menu within a year. Chick-fil-A got a B—it was healthier than many other chains in some ways, but only 20 percent of its meat was antibiotic-free. Here we are in 2019, and Chick-fil-A has worked its way into the top tier of healthy—relatively speaking—fast food chains.

What’s all the fuss about antibiotics in our food? It’s a serious threat to our health. When we eat food with antibiotics, we’re cutting down on the effectiveness of antibiotics when we’re sick. A 2017 World Health Organization report states, “If no action is taken today, by 2050, almost all current antibiotics will be ineffective in preventing and treating human disease.” That’s pretty scary stuff, and makes Chick-fil-A’s commitment that much more important.

At Chick-fil-A’s over 2,400 locations, customers will be able to rest assured that nothing on the menu will come from an animal that’s ever been treated with antibiotics. A 2018 Consumer Reports study shows that customers do care about this: Sixty percent of Americans surveyed said they would be more likely to eat at a restaurant that has gone antibiotic-free.

“We know consumers care about how their food is made and where it comes from, including the use of antibiotics. Because it was important to our customers, it was important to us,” Chik-fil-A Director of Menu and Packaging Matt Abercrombie said in a statement.

While the changes have been in effect since May, you’ll see it reflected in the chain’s packaging in October. So go ahead and treat yourself to that spicy chicken sandwich—we have a feeling it will taste even better with one less health concern attached.
