The NFL Draft has had a 31st pick in the first round each year since 1999 and, oddly, also in 1995.

That year, the NFL expanded to 30 teams and awarded two first-round picks to the new franchises in Carolina and Jacksonville. The Chiefs selected 31st overall in 1995, the only time in team history they have picked in that slot in the first round.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, their pick was a bust. The Chiefs took tackle Trezelle Jenkins out of Michigan and he never made an impact in Kansas City.

USA Today’s Christian D’Andrea selected the biggest first-round busts for each NFL franchise, and Jenkins was the pick for the Chiefs.

Other teams have found stars with the 31st pick in the first round. There have been some big misses, too. Here’s a closer look at every 31st pick in the first round.

The Colts selected Hughes from TCU and he played three seasons with Indy. He had 53 sacks in nine seasons with Buffalo and nine more sacks with the Texans in 2022.
