The Chiefs and 49ers are in the Super Bowl. But Dallas Cowboys have the most ticket-selling power

The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will fight to be No. 1 on the football field in Super Bowl LIV this Sunday. But the Chiefs have already won the battle for tickets sold across the U.S. through a top online marketplace.

The Chiefs sold at least one home-game ticket in 4,721 U.S. ZIP codes over the past two regular seasons – outpacing 49er home-game ticket sales in 3,565 ZIP codes over the same span.

The Chiefs’ sales placed them eighth among the league's 32 teams. The 49ers were 20th.

The Dallas Cowboys can still lay claim to be "America's Team." The team sold home game tickets in more ZIP codes around the country than any other NFL franchise.

USA TODAY analyzed NFL regular-season ticket sales purchased through Chicago-based ticket marketplace Vivid Seats during the 2018 and 2019 seasons from every ZIP code in the USA. The data is based on the billing ZIP code of the customer, and the home team that received credit for the sale.

America's team

During the past two seasons, a Cowboys home game ticket was purchased in nearly 20% of all of the country's ZIP codes.

The Cowboys sold home tickets in 8,523 ZIPs over the past two seasons – far more than the next highest team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Chargers, who left San Diego three years ago and have played in a temporary home since, have drawn ticket sales from about 2,000 ZIP codes in the same period.

Sales favor Chiefs

Oddsmakers expect Super Bowl LIV to be decided by a narrow margin. That hasn't been the case for the contenders' ticket sales.

Even when considering both Kansas and Missouri as the Chiefs' home state, more fans purchased Chiefs tickets from ZIP codes outside their home states.

Tops in most ZIPs

The Cowboys don't just sell tickets in more places, they dominate more markets.

The Cowboys tickets are the majority of ticket sales in more ZIP codes. Dallas had a majority of sales in nearly 2,500 ZIPs across the nation, outpacing the Super Bowl-bound Chiefs.

Crazy for NFL in Chicago

ZIP code 60657, near Wrigley Field, may be Chicago Bears’ territory, but it had ticket sales for 30 different home teams the past two seasons – tops among any U.S. ZIP.

The Bears had 43.7% of all sales in 60657 – although several other teams that sold home tickets were Bears opponents the past two seasons. It may be that Bears’ fans purchased tickets through Vivid to cheer their favorite team on the road.

Another Chicagoland ZIP code (60647) finished second, where 29 different teams sold home tickets. The Bears had 37.6% of the sales in that ZIP.
