Chiefs fans love that Patrick Mahomes prioritizes winning over being highest-paid QB

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes won a second NFL MVP award last season and followed it up by leading the Chiefs to a second Super Bowl title in his time in Kansas City.
Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league, but he’s not even among the top-five highest paid players in terms of total guaranteed money or average salary over three years as ESPN noted.
Lombardi Trophies are what matters most to Mahomes, as he said Wednesday at a news conference.
“Me, my agent and the team always keep open communication,” Mahomes said. “We try to do whatever is the best for the team, but obviously I want to do the best for myself as well. But at the same time I’ve always said I worry about legacy and winning rings more than making money at this moment.
“But I know we keep communication, we see what’s going on around the league. But at the same time, I’ll never do anything that’s going to hurt us from keeping the great players around me. So it’s kind of teetering around that line.”
Mahomes, 27, said he’s already set financially for life.
“It’s not about being the highest-paid guy,” Mahomes said. “It’s not about making a ton of money. I’ve made enough money where I’ll be set for the rest of my life. But at the same time, you got to find that line where you’re making a good amount of money but you’re still keeping like great players around you so you can win these Super Bowls and you’re able to compete in these games.”

"I worry about legacy and winning rings more than money at this moment."
"I've made enough money where I'll be set for the rest of my life."

Chiefs fans loved that Mahomes prioritized winning over being the highest-paid player in the NFL.
This is a sample of what Chiefs fans were saying on Twitter and Reddit.
If there were ever a case for a lifetime contract in the NFL, Pat would be the one. KC won the lottery with this dude.

“It’s unreal how lucky we are to have this beautiful man as our QB,” a fan wrote on Reddit. “We paid our dues as a fan base for sure, but it was all worth it for this era we’re living in. Will never take it for granted.”
Another added: “Gotta love it. We’re extremely fortunate to have a guy that has both the talent and the drive to dominate.”

I truly love this man. He gets it.
And all Chiefs fans will benefit from another decade of winning as a result. A wonderful thing for those of us who suffered for decades— Unconventionally Conventional (@UnconConven) May 24, 2023

A fan wrote on Reddit: “I’m glad he is the way his is. But anyone saying he doesn’t deserve to be the highest paid player in the NFL is a moron.”
This is what another shared: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen another athlete at the top of his game openly talk about not wanting more money to help his team except maybe Brady has probably talked about it. It definitely isn’t often or expected from someone so great to say something like ‘I’ve made enough money’ before. If Pat wanted to get paid the most he’d deserve it and I’d be all for it, but he’s different. Still can’t believe he’s the QB for the Chiefs.”

Those of us who have been watching, knew this is how Pat Felt. Pat turned down endorsement money his rookie season until he proved his value. He's built different.
