The Chiefs were missing three players at practice ahead of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hamstring), wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (illness) and running back Jerick McKinnon (hamstring) were unable to practice.

Toney, who suffered his injury in Week 11, missed all three days of practice last week and didn’t play in Week 12. It remains to be seen if the Chiefs will have him practice this week, but Toney is said to be making progress in the recovery process.

“Toney is getting better,” Reid said.

Toney’s continued absence affects not just the wide receiver position group, but special teams, where he assumed the primary punt returner role in Week 10. The Chiefs went back to rookie Skyy Moore in Week 12, but he lost his third muffed punt of the season and the Chiefs are again searching for answers at the return spot.

With Toney and Smith-Schuster not practicing Wednesday, the list of healthy receivers on the Chiefs’ active 53-player roster was down to Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Moore.

The Chiefs have wide receivers Marcus Kemp, Cornell Powell, Ihmir Smith-Marsette and newcomer Bryan Edwards on the practice squad.

The Chiefs later designated safety Juan Thornhill (calf; did not play Sunday vs. Rams), left guard Joe Thuney (ankle; did not play Sunday vs. Rams), safety Bryan Cook (wrist), defensive end Carlos Dunlap (foot), offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee), cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed (calf) and Jaylen Watson (hand) and wide receivers Valdes-Scantling (shoulder) Justin Watson (knee) as full participants in Wednesday’s practice.

Safety Deon Bush (elbow) put in a limited practice.
