Chiefs release DE Demone Harris from practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have cleared a spot on their practice squad ahead of Week 8.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice on Monday, the practice squad contract of DE Demone Harris has been terminated by the Chiefs. Harris first joined Kansas City as a late-season addition in 2019 when he was signed to the team from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. He spent the remainder of that season on the 53-man roster through Super Bowl LIV. He signed a reserve/future deal with the team and joined the Chiefs’ practice squad for the majority of the 2020 NFL season.

The team protected Harris on the practice squad as recently as last week. He has been protected a total of four times since Week 2. The 25-year-old appeared in two games for Kansas City in 2021, with standard elevations from the practice squad in Weeks 5 and 6, playing 17 total snaps on defense. He recorded no official statistics in those 17 snaps with the team.

After his two standard elevations, Harris would now be subject to waivers were the Chiefs to elevate him to the 53-man roster again. Last week, the team signed former Las Vegas Raiders draft pick Shilique Calhoun to the practice squad, presumably because they knew they’d need another option to elevate on the defensive line with Austin Edwards and Cortez Broughton being the only other defensive linemen on the practice squad. Should injuries or COVID-19 strike, there’s always a possibility that Harris is back with the team either on the practice squad or 53-man roster in the future.
