Chiefs trade conditional pick for Texans CB Lonnie Johnson Jr.

May 3—The Kansas City Chiefs didn't settle with five defensive backs taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, acquiring Texans cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr. via trade on Monday.

A second-round pick in 2019, Johnson tweeted saying that he asked for a trade. The Texans drafted LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. with the No. 3 overall pick and added Baylor safety Jalen Pitre in the second round.

Houston will receive a conditional seventh-round pick in 2024 as part of the trade.

In his three seasons in Houston, Johnson started 19 games and played in 25 others. He totaled 172 tackles, three interceptions and 13 pass breakups.

He joins a room that lacks experience behind L'Jarius Sneed and Rashad Fenton. Charvarius Ward moved on in free agency, and the likes of Deandre Baker and DiCaprio Bootle were in the two-deep on the depth chart. The Chiefs traded up to draft Washington corner Trent McDuffie with the 21st pick and added Joshua Williams from Fayetteville State and Jaylen Watson from Washington State on Day 3.
