There are not too many NFL players who can take a five-yard slant and turn it into a 71-yard gain, but the Kansas City Chiefs have one of them. Tyreek Hill’s 71-yard catch-and-run was one of the most exciting plays from the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Hill reached a max speed of 20.76 MPH and traveled a total distance of 102.5 yards per NFL Next Gen Stats.

“Yeah, well, he probably went, you know when they say, ‘as the crow flies,’ he took a different direction,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said of the play on Monday. “So, he went sideways, and it was probably double of what the crow would fly if it went straight ahead, but he did what he needed to do.”

Reid was very impressed with the play but surprised by what he heard from his star receiver after it. Hill came to the sideline and apologized to Reid for not scoring on the play, citing his old age (26) as the factor.

“The best part of that was the early part when he split the three defenders and then headed for that left side of the field, and there are not a lot of guys that can do what he did on that,” Reid said. “And then he came over and apologized for not scoring and that he’s gotten slow in his older age, and I’m going, ‘Yeah, OK.’ But he’s a unique guy that loves to play the game and I love that about him.”

The Chiefs are notorious for having a good time and keeping it loose on the sideline during the course of a game and afterward. Mahomes even joked a bit about this play with Hill on Twitter after Reid made the comment to the media.

The light-hearted nature of this team is just another one of the reasons they’re so successful.
