Child dies after falling into water in Wayne County, sheriff’s office says

A child has died after falling into water at a residence in Wayne County Monday evening.

Wayne County deputies responded to a call of a child that had fallen into water at a residence south of Greens Fork, Indiana around 7:53 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

The child was located and quickly removed from the water by family members.  Deputies and first responders arrived and began life saving measures, the sheriff’s office said.

The child was transported to Reid Health and later flown to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.

According to the sheriff’s office, the child did not survive and was pronounced dead hours after arriving at Riley Hospital.

“Although all indications are that this death was accidental, it remains under investigation until all investigations by involved agencies are completed and can be reviewed.  Although no suspicious circumstances were immediately evident, the Department of Children’s Services was called to the scene as a matter of protocol.” the sheriff’s office said.

Greens Fork Volunteer Fire Department, Greens Fork Marshal, Reid Health Ambulance, Wayne County Emergency Communications, and the Wayne County Department of Children’s Services responded to the incident.
