Child injured after falling from chairlift at Boyne Mountain

BOYNE FALLS — A child was injured and later transported to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids after falling from a chairlift at Boyne Mountain Resort on Saturday, Jan. 14.

According to a statement from Boyne Resorts, the incident occurred at approximately 5 p.m. when a young child accompanied by a family member loaded the Boyneland chairlift. The chairlift is a triple seat lift that services beginner terrain.

While in the air, between towers seven and eight, the child fell from the lift.

A bystander who witnessed the incident informed Ski Patrol, who immediately responded to the scene and began initial assessment and treatment. The child was then transported by ambulance to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey and later transported to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The child was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

“This was a scary incident for all involved,” said Jason Perl, general manager of Boyne Mountain Resort. “We have been in regular contact with the family and our thoughts will remain with them as this child recovers. The safety of our guests is a top concern and we’re grateful that a helmet was being worn.”

Boyne Mountain personnel inspected the chair and restraint bar and found all to be in working order.

To protect their privacy, Boyne Mountain officials said they do not release names or detailed medical information of guests who are injured at the resort.
