An 8-month-old child was killed and two adults injured when a vehicle police believe to be connected in an earlier home invasion struck them head on.

According to Illinois State Police, law enforcement officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Howard Drive in the Villa Hill neighborhood in unincorporated Belleville to investigate an attempted home invasion at about 6:20 a.m. on July 2.

A short time later, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputies spotted a red 2008 Pontiac G8 believed to be involved in the Villa Hills crime fleeing northbound on Interstate 255 in the southbound lanes. Sheriff’s deputies did not pursue the car, state police said.

The Pontiac hit the silver Nissan head-on, injuring the driver and two passengers, all of whom were transported by ambulance to St. Louis hospitals. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to ISP.

The identities of neither those who were injured or the suspects have been released. KMOV-TV in St. Louis reported that the two injured adults are the child’s parents. State police described their injuries as “significant,” but there is no further information on their conditions.

Three people were taken into custody at the scene and have since been released, the ISP release said. Charges had not been filed as of Wednesday evening. The investigation is ongoing.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family.

Anyone with information about the suspect vehicle or any knowledge of the incident is asked to contact Crimestoppers by phone at 314-725-8477 (TIPS), or ISP DCI Zone 6 Investigations at 618-571-4124. Witnesses can remain anonymous.
