Child safety meeting set in Snyder County

Feb. 21—PORT TREVORTON — Port Trevorton Fire Chief Kenton Martin has responded to enough emergencies to understand the importance of safety awareness training.

When a colleague suggested hosting a child safety awareness meeting for the community, Martin was immediately interested.

"We are seeing a lot more farming accident incidents involving children," he said. "It's not a frequent call, but they are definitely on the rise."

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, Port Trevorton and Fremont fire departments will hold the Eastern Snyder County Child Safety Awareness meeting with partners Snyder County Children and Youth, Evangelical Community Hospital, Penn State Extension, Pennsylvania State Police and Snyder County Emergency Management Agency.

The free event at the Snyder County Produce Auction, 6130 Susquehanna Trail in Port Trevorton, will include speakers, health screenings, safety demonstrations and activities, with a light lunch provided with a donation.

Snyder County Commissioner Joe Kantz, who was involved in a fatal farming accident in November 2022 that ended his father's life and years ago lost a young cousin in a similar farming accident, hopes the event will draw a crowd.

"For those that live a farm lifestyle, either full-time, part-time or just raising a few animals, they need to be aware," said Kantz. "It doesn't matter what age. Accidents can happen in a blink of an eye and they are devastating to families and a community."
