Children 5-11 approved for Pfizer booster by FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine Booster for kids aged 5-11.

In a Tuesday news release, the FDA approved the booster for children 5-11 who had completed the primary series — first two shots — at least five months earlier.

“While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized, and children may also experience longer term effects, even following initially mild disease,” FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf said in a statement.

The FDA approved Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine boosters for children 12-15 in January.
