Children’s Choir, ‘Carmina Burana’ performances this week in South Bend, at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND — Musical Arts Indiana performs twice this week:

• The Children’s Choir of Michiana presents “For Crying Out Loud” at 7 p.m. May 2 at Success Academy South Bend, 3408 Ardmore Trail. The concert, which includes guest soloist Diana Miller, focuses on hearing what children have to say about the world they will inherit. The selections give voice to their prayers for the world, their belief that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, their desire to make a difference, their ability to love and their strength to be the change. A reception follows the concert. Admission is $5.

Students on the radio: WETL-FM broadcasts Russian play about Chernobyl disaster

“Carmina Burana” at 7:30 p.m. May 6 at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center: Sacred Music Notre Dame, Concordia Vocal Ensemble, the Notre Dame Children’s Choir, Vesper Chorale and the Sacred Music Festival Orchestra combine forces to perform Carl Orff’s 1930s masterwork, “Carmina Burana.”

The orchestral-choral work is an immediately recognizable cantata embedded in the cultural consciousness from frequent concert performances to its use in film, TV and commercials.

Drawn from a 13th-century manuscript penned in Latin by a team of monks, the work’s ancient stories are playfully scrutinize church hierarchy, the natural world, love, life, partying and celebration.

The performance features soprano Jessica Roberts, tenor Raj Das, baritone Thomas Florio, conductor Mark Doerries and Vesper Chorale Artistic Director Jeshua Franklin.
