Chile crop sprouts out of ground despite 50 days without water

Farmers at Five-Star Chile in Socorro County began irrigating their crop at two-o’clock in the morning Sunday, April, 29, 2018.

This is the first time in 50 days the crops received water, according to farm owner Glen Duggins.

“We’ve gone as long as we can go,” Duggins said. “It’s desperate now.”

He says his crews will water 24 hours per day for about a week, until his irrigation water is shut off so the next farmer can use it.

Duggins says the chile will grow about three inches over the next few weeks, then his crews will start clearing out diseased plants.
