Chillicothe suspect asked for more officers before shooting

CHILLICOTHE -- Body cam video released by the Ross County Sheriff's Office shows the suspect in the shooting of Sgt. Eric Kocheran asking for a couple of more officers to come outside before pulling out a gun.

The body cam, along with the another video from an outside camera, was released Friday afternoon.

Kocheran remained in serious condition on Friday, according to the Ohio Attorney General's Office. The office also identified the suspect as Nicholas Mitchell, 42, who died at a Chillicothe-area hospital from his injuries.

The second video the sheriff's office released shows an outdoors view of the complex with no sound. In it, Mitchell is scene walking up to the door and then he backs up as he waits for someone to answer it.

In the body cam video, Kocheran opens the door and remains in the doorway when Mitchell asks for "a couple of more officers," to which Kocheran responds "What's going on?"

Mitchell then said, "Someone said they are going to hurt my family. They wanted me to hurt kids and I can't do it. Kocheran said "ok," in return and then Mitchell responds with "so I got to do this." At this point he pulls out a gun.

Kocheran shut the door part way as he draws his weapon and orders Mitchell to put down his gun. He repeats the order a couple of times before Mitchell takes his first shot. The exchange in gunfire ends with Mitchell on the ground.

The shooting occurred at 28 N. Paint St. around 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is continuing to investigate the case.

This is the 55th officer-involved shooting that BCI has investigated in 2022.
