The "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" Spellman Mortuary Has a Very Real U.S. Area Code

We now know where Greendale (and thus Riverdale) is located.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's town of Greendale, much like its neighboring town Riverdale, is undoubtedly full of enigmas. But perhaps the most indecipherable of all is its location.

We know writer and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa intended for the stories to have an otherworldly feeling, as if they existed in no specific time or space (and he nailed that). Both series are currently filmed in Vancouver, but where do the fictional towns stand in our maps? Well, a new promotional feature for CAOS might have given us a huge hint...

On Nov. 15, Netflix posted a rather innocent CAOS feature to Twitter centered around the Spellman Mortuary. In the clip, Hilda and Zelda welcome us into their home and business to give us a mini tour of the premises. The 32-second clip was accompanied by the caption “The Spellman Sister’s Mortuary: 845-443-7666” and, at the end, we are presented with an invitation to call said number.

If you were wondering whether or not this it is a real number without having to call yourself, we are glad to inform you it is real indeed. As you ring, Zelda's voice hellishly greets us in the form of a voicemail, inviting viewers to pay a visit during "the witching hour." And as real as the number is its prefix. Rather than the "666" ending of the phone (we see you Netflix), it was the "845" that caught our attention. As it turns out, "845" refers to an actual area code in the U.S. More specifically, in the Hudson Valley region of New York state.

You might be wondering why this is important and well, there have been multiple moments in the past that place Riverdale, and thus Greendale, in the Bronx, one of the boroughs of New York City. Incidentally, there is a real-life residential neighborhood in the Bronx called, you guessed it, Riverdale.

As it’s referenced multiple times on both shows, we know the town directly across from Riverdale, on the other side of Sweetwater River, is Greendale; and some eagle-eyed fans may had already noticed Riverdale's uncanny connection to New York, as Refinery 29 pointed out back in April. R29 found a fan on Reddit who highlighted multiple clues that could point out the location of the two the suburban, medium-sized towns. As the Reddit user pointed out, in the pilot for Riverdale, it is mentioned that the town is located in Rockland County.

“For those who don't know this is the area on the Western Side of the Hudson River (West Side of Tappan Zee Bridge). Nyack and Ramapo are located in this county,” the user wrote. “Ramapo, in the Native American language of Lenape, Ramapo means 'sweet water' just like Sweetwater River in Riverdale. In S1 EP12, Jughead is on a bus bound for "Mamaroneck". Mamaroneck is a town in Westchester County just north of New Rochelle and south of Harrison.”

We also know that Veronica used to live in NYC, and Archie had no problems heading into the Big Apple to pay a visit to Nick St. Clair during season 2. As a matter of fact, just in last week's episode, “The Midnight Club”, we hear a young Fred Andrews, played by KJ Apa, saying Riverdale is close enough to the city to keep working on his music should he pursue a career in town.

As Popbuzz also reports, the show suggests Riverdale is close to the Canadian border, “somewhere in the northeast," as Clifford Blossom smuggled drugs across the border and, at one point, FP refers to some gang member as being from the "north in Montreal.”

These clues together with the Spellman Mortuary's phone number could surely indicate both Riverdale and Greendale’s real whereabouts, given their close proximity. And while we may have a clearer picture of where Sabrina, Archie and his gang hang out IRL, we regret to inform you, that they still remain fictional so, sadly, there’s a slim chance you could head down to Pop's for a smoothie.

But as Aguirre-Sacasa recently told The New York Times, "Everything has a story. Everything has a reason.”
