China law violates HK autonomy, says UK's Johnson

"The enactment and imposition of this national security law constitute a clear and serious breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration," Johnson told parliament on Wednesday (July 1).

The new security law took immediate effect when it was published at 11 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Tuesday (June 30).

It will punish crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison, heralding a more authoritarian future.

The prime minister said Britain would stand by its pledge to give British National Overseas (BNO) passport-holders in Hong Kong a path to British citizenship, allowing them to settle in the United Kingdom. Almost 3 million Hong Kong residents are eligible for the passport.
