China has made soccer compulsory.

Following a series of embarrassing international losses earlier this year, President Xi Jinping has ordered that soccer will become a compulsory part of the national school curriculum.

The Economist reports that over the next three three years, 20,000 schools will receive football pitches and training facilities.

The aim is to create another 100,000 Chinese players by 2017.
