Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, angering China

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday, a highly anticipated visit that came amid increasingly harsh warnings of Chinese retaliation and escalating Washington-Beijing tensions. Here's the latest.

What we know:

• Fresh warnings from China: China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement minutes after Pelosi landed that condemned her visit as “a serious violation” of the one-China principle, which maintains Taiwan is part of China. "These moves, like playing with fire, are extremely dangerous," it said.

• Why she is defying China and Joe Biden: Pelosi has long been outspoken about civil rights in China and has a history of defying presidents dating back to the George H.W. Bush administration. Read more.

Heat brings new concerns in Kentucky flooding

Nearly a week has passed since flooding devastated eastern Kentucky, and residents are readying to face a new hurdle: High heat and humidity is forecasted to hit affected areas and impact those who still don't have electricity, running water or permanent housing. Here's the latest.

• What happened: At least 37 people have died, and many people are still unaccounted for after nearly a foot of rain last week led to intense flash floods, sweeping away entire houses and stranding residents on roofs.

• What the forecast means: High temperatures and humid conditions forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday are creating new obstacles for residents. Gov. Andy Beshear said cooling centers would be opened for those in need, including the thousands still without power.

Justice Dept. sues Idaho over restrictive abortion law

The Justice Department sued the state of Idaho on Tuesday seeking to invalidate the state's restrictive abortion law, marking the Biden administration's first such challenge since the overturn of Roe v. Wade in June. The Idaho law, set to take effect Aug. 25, imposes a near-total ban on abortion. Federal officials said it violates federal law, which allows for the procedure in cases when emergency treatment is necessary to stabilize patients. "We will use every tool at our disposal to ensure that pregnant women get the emergency medical treatment to which they are entitled under federal law," Attorney General Merrick Garland said. Batter up! MLB's trade deadline rounds the bases

Major League Baseball's trade deadline is here, and one of the biggest names on the market has found a new home. Washington Nationals star outfielder Juan Soto was traded to the San Diego Padres along with teammate Josh Bell in exchange for pitcher MacKenzie Gore and four prospects. Miami Dolphins hit with big penalties for tampering

An NFL investigation determined that the Miami Dolphins used “unprecedented” tampering in their failed pursuits of star quarterback Tom Brady and coach Sean Payton over the last three seasons, with the league stripping the team of draft picks and suspending and fining owner Stephen Ross in response. The investigation did not find evidence that the Dolphins intentionally lost games to improve their draft position, as was suggested in a lawsuit filed against the team.
