China and Russia hold joint military drills

STORY: The military exercises, called "Vostok-2002," are set to begin on September 1 and will last one week. Russia, China, India, Belarus, and Tajikistan are among nations taking part in the maneuvers.

Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov was at the opening ceremony for the exercises.

Earlier this month, China's defence ministry said its participation in the exercises was part of an ongoing bilateral annual cooperation agreement with Russia.
