China's Poyang Lake shrinking amid heatwave, drought

STORY: China's largest freshwater lake

has shrunk to a fifth of its size

Location: Jiangxi Province, China

due to a record heatwave and drought

Poyang Lake is usually full of

water this time of year

before receding dramatically

during the dry autumn and winter

(Zhang Daxian, Resident)

"Last year there was water in the lake. This year, I don't know what happened, it is so dry. It's been dry for a month and a half, almost two months. Historically the water was supposed to recede in the middle of September, but this year, it is weird, it dried up in the middle of July. I haven't seen anything like this in a long, long time, at least not for a decade or two."
