Chinese airlines begin avoiding Russian airspace on flights to USA

New Chinese flights recently approved by Washington seem to be affected, as previously approved flights by Chinese airlines to the USA still utilize Russian airspace.

The new flights, approved on May 18 by the US Department of Transportation, involve Air China (Beijing to New York), China Eastern (Shanghai to Los Angeles), Xiamen Airlines (Xiamen to Los Angeles), and China Southern (Guangzhou to Los Angeles).

In response to Washington’s ban on Russian flights over the United States since March 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia prohibited US other foreign airlines from flying over its airspace.

Chinese flights were not affected by these bans, though the new routes seem to be following a voluntary prohibition.
