Chinese Police Detain Protesters at Uyghur Solidarity Rally in Hong Kong

A Hong Kong rally in support of China’s Uyghur population descended into chaos on Sunday as protesters clashed with riot police and one officer pointed his gun at them, local media reported.

Tensions flared after protesters took down a Chinese flag from a pole in Edinburgh Place, Central, in Hong Kong.

The rally, which was attended by around 1,000 people, was held to express support to Uyghurs in Xinjiang, in northwest China. Human rights groups estimate up to one million predominately Muslim people are being held in internment camps in Xinjiang.

In a video shared by Ataraxis, a Hong Kong-based citizen journalist, police push through crowds to enter Edinburgh Place while the solidarity rally was ongoing. In a second video, protesters can be seen lined up with their hands against a wall while police patrol behind them.

“This video shows how random the police are, forcing someone who just happened to get trapped inside the police line, and not even in mask or black clothes, to line up,” Ataraxis said. Credit: @ataraxisfinch via Storyful
