  • Chip and Joanna Gaines bought a castle in 2019.

  • In a post on her blog, Joanna explains why she wasn't exactly on board with the idea at first, and how Chip's persistence inspired her.

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the dynamic duo of HGTV. These two are always on the same page when it comes to their projects, with Chip handling the construction and Joanna always crushing it with the design.

But even Chip and Jo disagree sometimes, and the future cooking show host opened up about one of those instances on her Magnolia blog. It all started years ago, when Chip first laid eyes on Waco’s Cottonland Castle.

“The first time Chip drove me by the old abandoned house, I watched his eyes get big and I could see excitement building,” she wrote. “Yet when I looked up at the downtrodden castle, all I could see was an incredibly daunting project—not to mention the place looked haunted.”

Fortunately for Joanna, the property wasn’t even up for sale. But Chip never forgot about the stately structure, chasing it down for “nearly two decades."

"Chip watched and waited, persistently putting in offers whenever the castle was relisted—each one passed over for someone else, while very few improvements appeared to be made," she said.

Even still, Joanna couldn't look past the challenges of the renovation. "All those years, I never could see the old house through the same lens as Chip,” she said.

Finally in 2019, Joanna had a change of heart and they added the building to their long list of real estate endeavors. “It finally felt right to me,” she said, and then praised her husband for helping her see past its faults.

“Chip saw the beauty and potential in this place years earlier than I did, but he never gave up,” she said. “Because of that, we now get to make this castle beautiful again.”

Though plans for the estate haven’t been finalized, Joanna is optimistic about the final results of the project that took years for her to get on board with. “There is a lot of beauty to be found in this old castle," she said.

Here's hoping we see it on their new network!
