Building An Empire
It's safe to say that if you have any interest in HGTV's line up or home design in general, you've probably heard of Fixer Upper couple Chip and Joanna Gaines. From their Magnolia design business to their line of home goods for Target, this couple has basically built an empire.
Now they're taking that partnership even further and are getting their own TV channel with Discovery, giving you shiplap 24/7. While there is no official release date yet, it will be with a new streaming service.
The Effect Of The Housing Crisis
The Gaines opened up about their unique union of work and marriage while speaking at the INBOUND business conference on September 13th, explaining that while they have security and success now, that hasn't always been the case. Joanna explained:
"The four or five years before we did the show, when the housing crisis hit, things were so hard for us. For four or five years every Friday, we were saying, ‘Are we gonna make it?’ We kept pressing through, even in those hard times. The value of what we learned in that is something I’d never want to do again, but I’d never not want that. The hard is what makes us appreciate this."
Working As A Team
While the two of them are definitely a united front, that doesn't mean that things are always perfect. In the end, it's just two flawed people working hard to make it work, just like everyone else. According to Chip, they have what it takes.
"This is a very hard thing to do, to work together with someone you also have a relationship and a family with. We definitely disagree. It’s not perfect. But for Jo and I, it really is a special bond we’re extremely proud of. We work really well together."
Opposites Attract
Anyone who watches Fixer Upper will definitely understand how this is an "opposites attract" situation, and Chip agrees.
"It really was this powerful chemistry that happened early in our marriage. We enjoyed spending time together, taking on challenges together. I would argue that at the end of the day, we learned early that we’re a lot stronger and powerful when we’re pulling together, as opposites to pulling against each other. We’re a powerful force when we operate like that. We definitely disagree. It’s not perfect. A lot of hard work goes into this, but if you can get to a mutual place of respect, you can change the world."
