A new Chipotle could be coming to Escambia County. What we know

A new Chipotle could be coming to West Nine Mile Road, according to the project’s filings with Escambia County.

The potential development was first discussed by Escambia County’s Development Review Committee in pre-application meetings on May 3. The project is currently still under review according to the Development Review Committee.

Developers of the new Chipotle plan for the restaurant to be 2,390 square feet and have a drive-thru lane with a menu board.

The parcel of the new Chipotle location is less than an acre large, but the restaurant will also have an outdoor seating area and 38 parking spaces available, according to the project’s site plan filed with Escambia County.

What is Chipotle?

Chipotle Mexican Grill is a fast-casual international restaurant chain that was founded in 1993 by Steve Ellis, who attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York and worked in San Francisco as a line cook before creating Chipotle.

Ellis returned to his hometown of Denver and opened up the first Chipotle location using an $85,000 loan from his father. Although Ellis is no longer with the company, his vision has expanded to approximately 2,500 Chipotle locations in the U.S., nearly 40 locations in Canada and 18 locations in the United Kingdom.

There are 222 Chipotle Mexican Grills across Florida, and this possible new location would be the chain’s third in Escambia County.

Where will the new Chipotle be?

The new Chipotle Mexican grill is planned to be built at 2401 W. Nine Mile Road, according to the project’s information form filed with Escambia County.

The new Chipotle Mexican Grill location is owned by the Engineering Design Group based in Foley, Alabama, according to the project’s information form filed with Escambia County.

How many Chipotle’s are in Escambia County?

There are two existing Chipotle Mexican Grill locations across Escambia County. One location is at the Cordova Mall and the other can be found at 1674 E. Nine Mile Road.

Another potential Chipotle Mexican Grill, planned to be built in tandem with a new Starbucks, could be coming off of Mobile Highway pending approval from the Development Review Committee, according to its filings with Escambia County.

The owners of the second potential Chipotle Mexican Grill off of Mobile Highway are a different group than the owners of the possible West Nine Mile Road location.

There is also a Chipotle Mexican Grill location at 725 Gulf Breeze Parkway in Gulf Breeze.
