Chipotle pickup window, Gateway Plaza upgrades OK’d

MACEDONIA – A drive-thru lane and pickup window are coming to Chipotle on Golden Link Boulevard, as are architectural improvements to make way for Nordstrom Rack and a yet unknown tenant at Gateway Plaza.

The city’s planning commission OK’d the drive-thru lane/pickup window and parking alterations at Chipotle, along with the Gateway Plaza facade changes, at its last meeting of the year on Dec. 19.

Chipotle plans to add a “Chipotlane” pickup window on the south side of the 2,405-square-foot building, with parking reduced from 47 spaces to between 35 and 39. The board of zoning appeals has OK’d a variance for the reduced spaces.

The plans also include a one-way, 19-foot-wide driving lane around the building and a black decorative fence with brick columns and lights along the Route 8 frontage to match that created in front of neighboring properties to the north and south.

A landscape island near the east end of some parallel parking spaces will be eliminated to minimize the loss of parking spaces. “This also will provide more separation between the relocated garbage dumpster and parking,” said city planner Brian Frantz.

Meanwhile, Nordstrom Rack will occupy 28,000 square feet at the west end of Gateway Plaza, with a future 8,300-square-foot space still available for a tenant between Nordstrom Rack and T.J. Maxx.

The total space in the building is 128,264 square feet, with other tenants being Office Max, Petco and Burlington. Best Buy and PNC Bank in separate buildings along Route 82 bring the plaza’s total space to 162,422 square feet, with 562 parking spaces.

In recent months, the planning panel approved modifications for a downsized Burlington store and a the new T.J. Maxx.

A garden center, which formerly was located at the west end of the main plaza building, will be eliminated, according to the revised plans.

Planning panelists had previously given the developers direction to ensure that the taller corner elements on the west end of the building transition appropriately to the much lower flat roofline.

Planners also agreed that the planned pilasters are acceptable provided that some degree of roofline transition occurs. Frantz said the revised plans illustrate a transitional height change along the facade.

The planning panel reelected Kevin Westbrooks as chairman and named Scott Wallenhorst as vice chairman for 2023.

Among pending items on the panel’s agenda are a proposed addition to Goddard School at 2073 Alexandria Way and installation of vehicle charging stations at 8100 Macedonia Commons Blvd.

A handful of commercial development projects continue to work their way toward completion, including Optima Dermatology offices adjacent to Chipotle, Panda Express on the Route 82 side of the Crossings at Golden Link and The Wave car wash at Route 8 and Highland Road.
