Quote: "As of 18 June 2023, according to the results of the conducted research, cholera vibrio was not found in the water, but cholera-like vibrio (which is a marker of the possible presence of cholera vibrio) was found in the following places:

  • Inhulets River  – city of Snihurivka;

  • Buh Estuary – Chaika Beach, Namyv recreation zone in the city of Mykolaiv;

  • Inhulets River – city of Mykolaiv

  • Dnipro-Buh Estuary."

Details: In addition, according to microbiological indicators, the levels of lactose-positive E. coli (at an acceptable level of 5,000 units) are as follows: 240,000,000 in Inhulets River, 6,200-13,000 in Dnipro-Buh Estuary.

The levels of dissolved oxygen, dry residue, chlorides, iron, and biological oxygen consumption did not meet the standards for sanitary and chemical indicators in the Inhulets River, and in the Dnipro-Buh Estuary there was an excess of the maximum permissible concentrations of ammonia.

There are no oil products or pesticides in the samples taken for research.

In order to prevent the occurrence of acute intestinal infections, Mykolaiv Oblast Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine recommends to:

  • not use water for drinking purposes

  • not swim in open water bodies

  • not eat river fish (including dried, lightly salted, smoked)

  • follow the rules of personal hygiene

  • treat hands with antiseptic agents.

Background: Earlier, after the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, a cholera-like vibrio was found in the Black Sea near the seaport in Odesa. It can cause acute intestinal infections, but is not the causative agent of cholera.
