New Kroger supermarket to open near Fort Gordon's Gate 1

Augusta is poised to get its second Kroger supermarket near Fort Gordon’s Gate 1.

The Augusta Commission voted Tuesday to approve a boundary plat for 24 acres near the corner of Jimmie Dyess Parkway and Harper Franklin Avenue, which clears the way to construct a 118,000-square-foot Kroger.

The size fits the parameters of a Kroger Marketplace, which during the past two years have “ranged in size from 100,000 to 130,000 square feet,” according to the supermarket chain’s website.

The supermarket would anchor a commercial development that includes four outparcels – three that are an acre each and another that is 1.5 acres – on which freestanding buildings can be constructed, according to plans on file with the city.

Already included in the initial Kroger development is a pair of stores labeled “Shops A” and “Shops B” on the plans. While no specific business is identified for either store, each building measures 5,400 square feet and shows access for a drive-through window.

The Kroger is expected to include a pharmacy and a Kroger Fuel Center. Kroger Marketplaces differ from typical Kroger supermarkets and carry wider product offerings of food, apparel and other general merchandise.

Access to the Kroger and the other stores would be off Harper Franklin Drive. That puts the new store across from the Belair K-8 School that was built in 2018 and next to the new Governors Place subdivision of single-family homes and two- and three-bedroom townhomes. Governors Place residents would have access to the Kroger through George W. Crawford Drive, which loops around the back of the subdivision.

A development of two-bedroom apartments, Pointe Grand, lies south of the store development, closer to Jimmie Dyess’ intersection with Gordon Highway.

The new Kroger would be the closest off-base supermarket to Fort Gordon, which contains the Fort Gordon Commissary grocery store.

The Marketplace would become Richmond County’s second current Kroger location. The Kroger in the Washington Walk shopping center at 2801 Washington Road opened in 1987. A Kroger that opened on 15th Street in 1981 was demolished in 2017. There are three Krogers in neighboring Columbia County.

Kroger opened its first supermarket in Augusta in 1958 in Southgate Plaza.
