California Highway Patrol officers are setting up a DUI checkpoint on Friday in the Auburn area, according to a news release.

The checkpoint will be “somewhere within the unincorporated area of Placer County,” the CHP said.

Depending on traffic volume, the patrol will check all cars for people who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Captain Brandon Straw of the CHP Auburn Area Commander, said in the release.

“Our objective is to send a clear message to those individuals that consider driving and mixing alcohol or drugs, you will be caught, and your vehicle will be towed away,” Straw said.

The CHP recommends people avoid accidents and arrests by having a sober driver, calling a taxi or rideshare service or avoiding being on the road.

The patrol states that the goal is to ensure cars can safely drive by targeting streets where there is a high frequency of drivers under the influence.

“A sobriety checkpoint is a proven effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations,” the CHP said.

Enforcement agencies are required by law to announce a checkpoint to the public before it happens with at least the general area.
