California Highway Patrol reports possible suicide on Highway 101 south of La Conchita

A man's death on southbound Highway 101 near Faria Beach late Wednesday morning was later confirmed as a suicide.

The California Highway Patrol had said Wednesday it was investigating the incident, during which a man reportedly jumped from an overpass, as a possible suicide.

On Friday, the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the manner of death as suicide for the 88-year-old Ventura man. The man's age and city of residence weren't initially available when the CHP initially reported the fatality. The Star generally does not name victims of suicide and typically reports on such incidents only when they impact public areas.

At around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, callers had reported a possibly suicidal subject on the Padre Juan Canyon Road bridge, CHP officials said in a release Wednesday. The bridge cuts over the freeway near the curve by Faria Beach.

When CHP officers and Ventura County Fire Department crews arrived, the man was found face down in the left fast lane and pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The incident closed one of two lanes for a time. The freeway section is in a construction zone where southbound lanes are split south of Mussel Shoals. Officials closed the left lane of the split while accessing the scene.

Officer Jorge Alfaro, spokesman for the CHP's Ventura-area office, said witnesses told officers the man had jumped from the bridge.
