Chris Jarosz, 55, owner of Broderick Roadhouse and Anonimo Pizza, killed in Sacramento crash

Chris Jarosz, 55, was well-known in the capital region’s restaurant community.

Jarosz died early Wednesday morning when his SUV crashed into a parked work truck in the freeway construction zone along Highway 50 in East Sacramento. He was the co-owner of Broderick Roadhouse, Anonimo Pizza and Bones Craft Kitchen.

One of three children, Jarosz was born in Massachusetts in 1968, the Sacramento News and Review reported in a 2017 profile. He came to Sacramento in 2000, and his wife and three daughters helped support him through 2008’s recession.

He also owned Localis, Saddle Rock and Wicked ‘Wich food truck at various points. He sold Localis in the late 2010s. The midtown restaurant earned a Michelin star last year. He almost resuscitated Oak Park Brewing Co. in 2019.

In 2018, he was sued by Melissa Sanchez, who founded and operates Harvest Law Group. Sanchez said Jarosz and two associated companies defrauded Sanchez following her sale of two restaurants to Jarosz.

Broderick Roadhouse

Broderick opened in West Sacramento in 2012. It started as a food truck and quickly expanded to locations in midtown Sacramento, West Sacramento, Carmichael, Roseville and Walnut Creek.

Jarosz was evicted from the midtown location in 2022. He said decided to move on from the space instead of “fight” his landlord, Robert Clippinger, in court.

Broderick became a handful of ghost kitchens during the pandemic. It was a Jewish deli, a cheesesteak post and a Cajun-inspired sandwich shop.

The Johnny Cash Burger is a popular menu item with applewood-smoked bacon and fried onion strings.

Anonimo Pizza

Anonimo Pizza on 12th Street in Alkali Flat opened early 2022. It is the “hippest” of Jarosz’s big three restaurant spots he leaves behind, according to The Bee’s food reporter, Benjy Egel. This is due to a sleek combination of graffiti art, copper-colored tables and throwback hip-hop music.

Pizzas are not served by individual slice but somewhere between New York and Neapolitan styles, thin and cheese-covered beauties with a good amount of flop. With no traditional style direction, Egel said it is free to create inventive variations.

“We’re really trying to not just be a great pizza option for Sacramento, but (to) really produce some of the best pizza anywhere,” Jarosz said in 2022. “I always wanted to be in pizza. I never thought I was going to be (owning) a burger joint.”

Bones Craft Kitchen

Bones Craft Kitchen, located on D Street in Davis, opened summer 2022. It specializes in burgers, sandwiches and shareable plates such as Gorgonzola oyster mushroom fries.

It opened as a sister restaurant to Broderick and Anonimo, according to Jarosz at the time, but cooks would source from the Davis Farmers Market to make healthier, possibly vegan options than the burger joint.

“I always thought Davis was such an amazing little town with a really great international foodie audience,” Jarosz told The Bee a year ago. “There are so many different cultures being celebrated here and there’s access to an amazing farmers market ... there’s a million reasons why Davis is a good spot for the future.”
