Multiple Jacksonville-based athletes are set to take to the track beginning Friday at the World Track Championships, although national decathlon champion Garrett Scantling is a notable omission from the United States roster.

USA Track and Field's 151-athlete roster includes four competitors who currently live and train in the Jacksonville area.

Trayvon Bromell, world bronze medalist in 2015, and former Florida State sprinter Marvin Bracy-Williams are scheduled to race in the men's 100-meter dash. Former University of Florida athlete and two-time Olympic gold medalist Christian Taylor returns from an Achilles tendon injury to participate in the men's triple jump, and Nia Ali competes in the women's 100 hurdles.

Taylor, who ranks second all-time in the triple jump, won the Olympic gold medals in 2012 in London and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. He also won the world championships in 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Ali won a gold medal in the 2019 world championships in the 100 hurdles in Doha, Qatar, and also won silver in the 2016 Olympics.

Not scheduled to compete in Oregon is Scantling, the first Jacksonville native ever to compete in the Olympic decathlon with his fourth-place finish last summer in Tokyo.

USA Track and Field did not respond to a Times-Union inquiry about the status of Scantling.

The Episcopal High School graduate had won the USA Track & Field Combined Events Championship in April in Fayetteville, Ark., where he scored a career-high 8,867 points. That total had placed him first in the world to date for 2022 and ranked third all-time among American men, exceeded only by Ashton Eaton and Dan O'Brien.

Garrett Scantling runs 10.53 in the decathlon during the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Episcopal graduate placed first in the national championships earlier this year, but is not on USA Track & Field's roster for Oregon.

Scantling, who competed in the collegiate decathlon at the University of Georgia, resumed training three years ago after a hiatus from track and field competition. He had stepped away from athletics after missing the 2016 U.S. Olympic team for Rio de Janeiro, followed by an attempt to compete in the National Football League.

During 2021, he established himself among the world's best in the two-day, 10-event competition. After placing first in the U.S. Olympic Trials last spring, he finished just outside the medals in Tokyo, 38 points behind bronze medalist Ashley Moloney of Australia. Canada's Damian Warner won the gold, followed by Kevin Mayer of France.

USA Track & Field designated Steven Bastien of Ann Arbor, Mich., the 10th-place finisher at the Olympics, as Scantling's replacement for the world championships. The other two American decathlon qualifiers are Kyle Garland and Zach Ziemek.

Canada's Andre De Grasse, who won 200-meter gold in Tokyo and also trains on the First Coast, heads the list of international athletes with area ties.

De Grasse, 27, also owns two silver and three bronze medals across two Olympics, beginning in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
