Burlesque is back!

Entertainment Weekly reported late last week that the cult classic 2010 film starring Cher and Christina Aguilera is being adapted for the stage, and it sounds like the process is well underway.

“I’ve been secretly working on this for the past year!” Todrick Hall wrote on Instagram, sharing the article. “I guess the cat is out of the bag! Can’t wait for you all to hear the new tunes I’ve been creating!”

Burlesque followed aspiring performer Ali (Aguilera) after she arrived in Los Angeles and picked up a waitressing gig in a struggling burlesque lounge owned by Tess (Cher), eventually winning Tess over and landing a spot on the stage.

The film also starred Kristen Bell, Can Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Stanley Tucci, Alan Cumming, Dianna Agron, Peter Gallagher, and James Brolin. It was written and directed by Steven Antin, who is also writing the stage musical and confirmed its existence to EW.

Aguilera is said to be serving as an executive producer on the project, which will feature original songs written for the movie, along with additional numbers written by Hall and Jess Foley.

Considering the subject matter, bringing Burlesque to the stage makes perfect sense, and fans of the original film are already excited to see what the production has to offer, for the most part.
