Christkindl Market and 8 other things to do this week

'Tis the season, already.

The Christkindl Market, which opens Friday and continues through the weekend, is considered by many as the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season.

But consider one more rite of autumn, as on Saturday, the annual Canandaigua Treaty of 1794 commemoration will show you the richness of the history of Canandaigua and the Finger Lakes.

All of this and several other special events you may enjoy are happening this week, in addition to Veterans Day activities throughout the county.

1. The Erie Canal and Underground Railroad

Derrick Pratt, museum educator at the Erie Canal Museum, will give a talk as part of the Farmington Historic Preservation Commission’s fall lecture series. “Pathway of Resistance: The Erie Canal and Underground Railroad” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Farmington Town Hall, 1000 County Road 8.  Any weather- or illness-related cancellations will be updated on the town of Farmington’s website calendar at www.townoffarmingtonny.com.

2. A Grand Night for Singing in Geneva

An elegant evening of entertainment and desserts features the St. Peter’s Community Teen Choir singing hits from Broadway musicals such as “Funny Girl,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” Monty Python’s “Spamalot,” “Sister Act” and even some selections from Disney’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” The event, which is at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy in Geneva, is a fundraiser for the choir’s next trip to England, Scotland and Ireland in February 2024. Admission is $25 for adults; $20 for seniors and students, and free for children 12 and under.

3. Christkindl Market in Canandaigua

The Christkindl Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, through Sunday, Nov. 12, at Granger Homestead & Carriage Museum, 295 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The 16th annual Christmas market includes the Festival of Trees, Women’s Council bake sale, German and traditional food, wine and beer, elf school and Santa. 4. Pumpkin composting in Geneva

A free pumpkin composting event open to Ontario County residents is planned from 8 to 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the town of Geneva Transfer Station, 32 White Springs Road. In addition to pumpkins, gourds, flowers, hay and cornstalks will be accepted (but no plastic or metal). For more information, visit ontariocountyrecycles.org.

5. Bristol Springs Grange Hall 100th anniversary

Visitors will enjoy a 100th anniversary ceremony and storytelling event at the Bristol Springs Grange Hall, which is home to the Bristol Hills Historical Society, 6457 state Route 64, Naples. Historian Beth Thomas and others from the Historical Society will give a brief talk at the rededication event on the role the Grange Hall played in supporting farming and social life in the early days of European-American settlement of the region. A new plaque recognizing the Grange’s place on the National Register of Historic Places will also be placed. The ceremony is planned to start at 10 a.m. Nov. 11.

6. Canandaigua Treaty of 1794 commemoration

The annual event will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 on the front lawn of the Ontario County Courthouse, 27 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The commemoration serves to “polish the chain of peace and friendship” between the Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Six Nations Confederacy) and the young United States. The treaty was signed by Colonel Timothy Pickering—official agent of President George Washington—and sachems from the Six Nations Grand Council. It signified peace between the two and recognized the sovereignty of the other as distinct nations to govern and set their own laws. The original treaty can be viewed from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Ontario County Historical Society, 55 N. Main St., Canandaigua.

7. Enjoy a ‘Whimsical Safari’ in Geneva

The "Whimsical Safari: Arc Ontario" exhibition opens 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at The Dove Block community arts center, 465 Exchange St., Geneva. The show runs through Saturday, Nov. 25. Visit the shows for free between noon and 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

8. Connie Fredericks-Malone in concert in Canandaigua

Connie Fredericks-Malone, who performs classic jazz standards and some blues and pop songs to digitally mastered backing tracks, will perform "Alone With My Music" at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the First Congregational Church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The concert will raise money for the All Are Welcome mission, which provides funds for the Wood Library and other area libraries to supply books, related materials and kits about diversity. An offering will be collected at the concert. The concert will also be available live online at canandaiguachurch.org.

9. Learn about early semi-pro baseball in Victor talk

Presenter Tim Munn will give a talk on “Baseball: The Early Semi-Pro Leagues” at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 in the first-floor meeting room at Victor Town Hall, 85 E. Main St., Victor. His talk is part of a fall lecture series in Victor.
