Police investigating after South Brunswick man killed in Route 1 crash

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Police are continuing to investigate a crash on Christmas Eve on Route 1 that left a 23-year-old township man dead.

The man was later identified as Vedant Tiru. He died at the scene, police said.

The one-car crash was reported at 12:53 a.m. Dec. 24 on Route 1 southbound by New Road. Tiru was driving a 2012 Honda Accord southbound on the highway when, according to witnesses, he lost control, slid sideways across the roadway and struck a utility pole. Kendall Park First Aid, Kendall Park Fire Department, Middlesex County Medical Examiner, and New Jersey State Department of Transportation responded.

Route 1 southbound was closed for several hours during the investigation, police said.

At 7:25 a.m., a fire truck from the Kendall Park Fire Department was clearing debris from the crash scene when they were struck by another vehicle. The fire truck was on New Road crossing over Route 1 when a car headed north on Route 1 failed to stop at the red light, police said. The car and fire truck impacted in the intersection.

There were no injuries and the 57-year-old Milltown driver was issued several summonses, police said. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau PFC Bryan Sites at 732-329-4648.
