How will the Christmas holiday affect trash collection in the Norwich area? What to know

With Christmas fast approaching, here’s how the holiday will affect garbage and recycling collection in the area.

In Norwich, when a major holiday falls on a weekday, the refuse and recycling will be picked up the following day. Major holidays that impact the schedule include New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Since Christmas is on a Monday this year, trash and recycling will be picked up the next day. All subsequent collection days during a holiday week will be postponed one day. Friday collections will be serviced on Saturday during weeks with a holiday.

Norwich will not provide curbside trash and recycling collection on Monday, Dec. 25 due to the Christmas holiday. Trash pickups in the city will be delayed one day all week.

Norwich residents should have their refuse and recycling containers curbside by 6 a.m. Containers placed out after 6 a.m. may not be serviced that week.

In addition, Norwich residents must place their trash in containers provided by Willimantic Waste. Trash cans cannot contain lawn debris, sheetrock, construction and demolition materials. Those items must be taken to the transfer station located at 73 Rogers Road (a fee will be charged). Containers must be covered to prevent rain and snow from filling them.

The Norwich Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, Dec. 25 for Christmas. The station will be open from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday through Friday of that week and from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30. It will be closed Sunday, Dec. 31.

Killingly

There is no curbside garbage and recycling pickup in Killingly, as residents bring their trash to the transfer station and recycling center located at 246 Brickhouse Road. The facility is open Thursday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (residents must arrive by 3 p.m.) and is closed on holidays. Since Christmas is on a Monday this year, it will not impact the transfer station and recycling center’s hours of operation.

Plainfield

The town of Plainfield does not provide garbage and recycling curbside pickup services. Residents must contract with a hauler to receive these services.

Plainfield residents can drop bulky waste and recyclables off at the town’s transfer station located at 54 Roode Road. The facility is open on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. The transfer station will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, only if they fall on a Saturday.

The station is open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as the first and third Saturday of each month from 7 a.m. to noon.
