Met Office gives verdict on snow today after warmest Christmas Eve in 20 years – live

The UK has seen its warmest Christmas Eve in over 20 years after Heathrow hit 15.3C, making it the warmest Christmas Eve since 1997.

Met Office forecaster Liam Eslick said: “It’s been an exceptionally mild couple of days across all of the UK, temperatures have been well above average for the time of year, the maximum for December being 7C.

“Temperatures today have reached 15C in quite a few locations across the UK, the highest being 15.3C in two locations – one in Heathrow and one in Cippenham, Berkshire.”

Christmas Day is also set to be the hottest in years, with parts of the UK expected to hit 14C today.

A White Christmas has been ruled out for most of the country, apart from the mountains of northern Scotland.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said: “The temperatures will peak today, there is a slight downward trend in temperatures for Christmas Day, but we’re still expecting them to be comfortably above average.

“We’re looking at 13C and 14C tomorrow, we’re probably looking at the warmest Christmas Day since 2016, when we actually hit 15.1C.”

Record long-distance coach links on Christmas Day

03:30 , Simon Calder

No trains will run in the UK on 25 December 2023. But many of the 20 million Brits without a car can enjoy better public transport on Christmas Day than ever – from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight and South Wales to East Anglia.

The best service of all is on the Isle of Wight, with regular buses from 8am to midnight.

Our travel correspondent, Simon Calder, has rounded up the options:

Christmas Day travel: more options than ever with long-distance buses

Domestic flights very thin on 25 December

02:30 , Simon Calder

Very few domestic flights will operate on Christmas Day. Those that do are mainly to connect with international services at London Heathrow.

British Airways is operating three flights each way between Edinburgh and Heathrow, and four each way linking Glasgow and Manchester with Heathrow.

Most fares are very high, but the 6.15am from Glasgow to London Heathrow is selling at only £55.

Christmas Day set to be hottest in years

Christmas Day is also set to be the hottest in years with parts of the UK expected to hit 14C.

A White Christmas has been ruled out for most of the country, apart from the mountains of northern Scotland.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said: “The temperatures will peak today, there is a slight downward trend in temperatures for Christmas Day but we’re still expecting them to be comfortably above average.

“We’re looking at 13 and 14C tomorrow, we’re probably looking the warmest Christmas Day since 2016, when we actually hit 15.1C.”

The warmest December 25 on record was 15.6C in 1920, while the highest Christmas Eve temperatures of 15.5C were set in Aberdeen and Banff in Scotland in 1931.

Mr Stroud said the UK is drawing in southern, warmer air.

Monday is set to be damp for much of the country, with heavy rain possible in Wales.

Two separate yellow wind warnings were issued by the Met Office in Scotland and northern and central areas of England for Christmas Eve, saying people should expect travel disruption, damage to buildings and power cuts, while the rest of the country may see showers.

Forecasters say gusts of up to 56mph hit parts of the Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland on Sunday morning.

Wind speeds of up to 70mph were recorded in Scotland later in the day, reaching 60mph in the north-east of England.

Christmas Day could be hottest on record as Met Office gives final verdict on snow

Sunday 24 December 2023 23:30 , Lydia Patrick

Christmas Day could be the warmest on record the Met Office has said, despite the threat of snow in parts of the country.

The forecaster expects unseasonably mild temperatures across much of the UK on Monday, in the early to mid-teens.

The hottest Christmas Day on record was 15.6C in 1920, and there is a chance - albeit a small one - this could be matched or even beaten, the Met Office says.

Will it snow tomorrow?

Sunday 24 December 2023 22:30 , Lydia Patrick

Meteorologist Liam Eslick said there may be snow on December 25 on mountains in Scotland but it is “not looking likely that there will be a white Christmas in England”.

He added that Christmas Day is expected to be a lot milder than usual, with the average December temperature between 7C and 8C, but the top temperature that could be seen this December 25 is 14C.

The warmest Christmas Day on record was 15.6C in 1920, so there is a “small chance” of it being a record, Mr Eslick added.

Most of the country will be damp on Monday, with heavy rain possible in Wales, though it is expected to brighten up after lunchtime.

Christmas Day travel: more options than ever with long-distance buses

Sunday 24 December 2023 21:30 , Lydia Patrick

As usual, no trains will run in the UK on 25 December.

But from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight and South Wales to East Anglia, many of the 20 million Britons who have no access to a car will be able to access better public transport on Christmas Day 2023 than ever before.

Thriving competition between coach companies means record long-distance services will run on 25 December.

On the Cardiff-Bristol-Heathrow airport-London route, Megabus passengers can choose from four departures each way.

In Scotland, Glasgow is connected with Edinburgh by a dozen Citylink buses in either direction.

Northern Trains has issued a Do Not Travel notice for seven of its routes in northwest England on Sunday, including Manchester Victoria to Chester and Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly due to train crew unavailability.

South Western Railway trains are recovering after an earlier track circuit failure on one of the nation’s busiest stretches of line, between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction.

Trains start winding down towards the late afternoon and through the evening. Services will be reaching their final destinations much earlier than on a normal Sunday. No trains will run on Christmas Day and very few lines are open on Boxing Day.

Two yellow weather warnings in palce

Sunday 24 December 2023 18:30 , Lydia Patrick

Two separate yellow wind warnings have been issued by the Met Office, saying people should expect travel disruption, damage to buildings and power cuts, while the rest of the country may see showers during the day.

Forecaster Jonathan Vautrey said: “Obviously there will be quite a lot of people travelling and wanting to get home for Christmas itself.

“Particularly with these strong winds we could see some flying debris thrown on to particular roads or railway services, so if you get a tree down then that’s going to cause cancellations and delays.

“There’s the potential for isolated power cuts which will again lead to the risk of some disruption at times.

“If you’ve got a particular train that you’re catching make sure you’re looking ahead of time if there have been any cancellations.

“Just make sure you’re driving carefully, there’s the potential that high-sided vehicles could get hit by strong gusts of wind which has the potential to cause impacts, so we might see bridges closing as well.”

Bad weather is causing further disruption as millions try to reach their destinations. National Highways says the M48 Severn Bridge in Gloucestershire is currently closed in both directions between Junction 1 (Aust) and Junction 2 (Chepstow) due to strong winds.

“Traffic should use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as an alternate route,” the organisation says.

Some strategic bridges are closed to high-sided vehicles, including the Humber Bridge.

Final departures are approaching quickly. Last ferries sail from Dover for Dunkerque at 2pm and Calais at 2.25pm.

As with other services, Great Northern trains will finish earlier than usual and all routes will finish by around 9pm, with some ending even earlier.

Due to engineering work at London Kings Cross the following changes apply:

Until 10pm, buses will replace trains between Finsbury Park and Potters Bar / Hertford North.

Motoring organisations warn of extra pressure on roads

Sunday 24 December 2023 10:44 , Simon Calder

On the roads, the middle of Christmas Eve is likely to see the biggest queues.

The RAC says : “There’s a good chance drivers will cram lots of journeys today 24 December, making it a good date to avoid being on the roads. If you can’t, allow some extra time and expect some lengthy delays.”

In southern Scotland, motorists are being warned of surface water, with some bridges – including across the Firth of Forth closed to high-sided vehicles due to strong winds.

At the Port of Dover, the approach to the French frontier post is now free-flowing. In previous days, queues of up to 90 minutes have built up due to post-Brexit border formalities.

The final ferries for Calais and Dunkirk depart in early afternoon on Christmas Eve, with cross-Channel sailings resuming on Boxing Day morning.

Eurotunnel will be running car-carrying shuttles between Folkestone and Dover throughout Christmas.

Trains to stop running earlier than usual

Government statement on Christmas travel

Sunday 24 December 2023 05:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “We know that Christmas is a busy time on our roads - and we work closely with train operators, ports and airports to ensure people can get to where they need to be during the festive period.

“To keep congestion to a minimum, National Highways is ensuring more than 98% of motorways and A-roads are roadwork-free, with over 96% of the rail network also open during Christmas and New Year.

“This Government has made unprecedented investment in transport infrastructure and to suggest otherwise is factually wrong.

“We are providing a record £44.1 billion for Network Rail to run a safe rail network.

“Our Network North plan - backed by £36 billion - will further revolutionise the country’s transport infrastructure with investments in hundreds of local transport projects that matter most to people.”

The best places to see the Northern Lights in the UK

Sunday 24 December 2023 04:00 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

One of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena, at certain periods during the year the Northern Lights regularly light up the skies of northern countries that sit in the ‘aurora zone’ of the Arctic Circle.

The light show happens when electronically charged particles enter the Earth’s atmosphere from space, producing dazzling displays of green, yellow, purple and even red lights.

This is visible every year in some areas of European countries like Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway, while there are regular sightings in parts of Canada and Greenland too. Fortunately for Brits, you don’t necessarily need to trek to these countries to see the aurora borealis; sightings have become more frequent in the UK, with the lights seen as far south as Wiltshire in February 2023.

Rail is on track for managed decline, with fare rises only part of the problem

Rishi Sunak has been called many things, but here’s a particularly crisp description from one of the railway industry’s most respected figures, Nigel Harris: “The most anti-rail prime minister we’ve ever had.”

That succinct characterisation was made in an episode of the Green Signals podcast, which Mr Harris co-presents.

At the Conservative conference in Manchester, Mr Sunak announced with relish that he was overturning a decade of consensus that Britain needs a new, comprehensive high-speed rail network – and scrapping HS2 to Manchester.
