Governor's Office announces Christmas Tree lighting at Capitol building in Pierre

The 2022 Grand Lighting Ceremony for Christmas at the South Dakota Capitol has been announced, according to Gov. Kristi Noem's office.

The ceremony, which will include lighting a 38-foot Black Hills Spruce tree, will take place in the Capitol Rotunda on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m., according to Ian Fury, a spokesperson for the Governor's Office. The theme for this year is "Merry Prairie Christmas."

Around 82 trees included in the Christmas display will be decorated by various volunteers from communities, schools, churches, non-profits and state government offices, according to Fury.

The Black Hills Spruce will be decorated by the South Dakota Shriners, according to Fury. The tree was donated by Steve and Sue Ahlers and Donald and Kristin Berger, from Pierre. The tree will be trimmed to stand at 29.5 feet.

Children can also drop off their letters to Santa at his North Pole Mailbox located on the first floor by the South Dakota First Ladies and First Gentlemen Exhibit.

The display will be open daily to the public starting on Nov. 23 until Dec. 26. Hours for visiting are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m..
