Christmas Tree Shops closing Spring Valley Marketplace store as part of bankruptcy

SPRING VALLEY − The Christmas Tree Shops in the Spring Valley Marketplace is among 10 stores primed for closure as part of the chain's Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Christmas Tree Shops filed for bankruptcy in Delaware on May 5. The list of closures was provided May 8 and includes the Rockland store; one in Watertown, New York; two each in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania; and one each in Virginia, Michigan and Georgia.

The stores are expected to close in June.

The stores, which offer a conglomeration of household goods and tchotchkes at discount prices, were once under the umbrella of Bed Bath & Beyond. That chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is shuttering its remaining stores.

Changes at Marketplace

Meanwhile, the Spring Valley Marketplace has been amid change. The 19-acre marketplace, which was sold in 2019 in a $59.3 million transaction, has seen turnover in its smaller stores as well as anchors.

In 2020, Bingo Wholesale, which is often touted as a kosher Costco, came to the strip mall that's tucked off Route 59 and Exit 14 of the Thruway in the Clarkstown section of Spring Valley.

Bingo, which uses the slogan, "No tricks no shticks," refers to the location as Monsey, although technically the hamlet in the town of Ramapo that has a large Orthodox Jewish community is about three miles away.

In 2021, another anchor store, Michaels, moved from the strip mall a few miles down Route 59 in Nanuet.

The Bed Bath & Beyond closed in 2022, outlasting the one shuttered at the Palisades Center in West Nyack by a couple years.

The center also has a standalone Target and two hotels tucked behind the popular store. An IHOP also draws customers to the center, which has a large parking lot.

Indoor mall on the way

The Marketplace, an indoor mall, in the western area of the strip mall where Michaels and Bed Bath & Beyond were located, is under construction. The sleek exterior appears near completion.

According to Rockland Daily and other publications, the center and marketplace are set to offer more kosher food options and retail that would be attractive to Orthodox Jewish shoppers.

Naftali Greenberg of Yes Realty referred questions to Alexander Properties, which is based in New City. A message left at Alexander Properties, also listed as Anders Properties, was not immediately returned.
