Christoval and Mason high schools won regional championships in girls cross country on Monday.

Christoval won its second consecutive regional championship at the Region I-2A meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

The Mason girls got the top prize this year at the Region IV-2A meet in Corpus Christi after finishing second last year.

The top four teams in each UIL classification at four regional meets advance to the UIL State Cross Country Championships Nov. 4-5 in Round Rock.

For athletes competing without the five required to make up a team, advancement to state is possible by finishing in the Top 10 of those individuals not already on an advancing team.

In Class 2A competition in Lubbock, Eldorado’s Jessica Garcia, Sterling City’s Molly McPherson, Reagan County’s Julian Rodriguez and Ozona’s Corey Ybarra all earned a ticket to the state meet with a Top 10 finish.

Other individual state qualifiers include Coleman's Jacob Ramirez and Miles' Jaxson Garcia.

In Corpus Christi, Harper’s Peyton Cox and Junction’s Calixto Valencia earned trips to state.

The Christoval girls scored 85 points to win the title over Gruver, which had 130. There are at least five members on each team and the meet is scored by adding together each team runner’s place of finish. The team with the lowest total is the winner.

A trio of sophomores finished 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively against a field of 164 runners to lead the Christoval girls.
