CANTON—The Canton High School boys basketball team broke out of an 0-4 start to the season with a 47-44 victory over Morton in a Mid-Illini Conference game at Alice Ingersoll Gym on Saturday.

Morton entered the game with a 4-0 record.

The Little Giants used a 14-2 scoring edge in the second quarter to take a 24-17 halftime lead and held on down the stretch to pull out the victory.

Turner Plumer's 15 points and seven rebounds led Canton and the Little Giants also got eight points and six rebounds from Trace Rhodes and eight points and six rebounds from Connor Wilcoxen.

Canton visits East Peoria on Friday and hosts Pekin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

•The Canton Lady Giants dropped a 44-23 decision to Morton in a Mid-Illini Conference basketball game on Friday.

Canton, now 4-3, trailed just 12-11 at halftime but was outscored 15-4 in the fourth quarter.

Morton improved to 6-0 for the season.

Allison Wheeler's 7 points and Jena Goforth's 5 led the Lady Giants.

Harvard-bound Katie Krupa scored 17 points for Morton.

Canton will host East Peoria at 6 p.m. Friday.

•The Canton wrestling team moved its dual meet record to 4-3 after going 2-2 at the Plainfield North megaduals on Saturday.

The Little Giants took a 42-37 win over Minooka and defeated Peotone 48-27 before falling to Lincoln Way Central 43-25 and Lincoln Way East 62-16.

Joseph Norton led Canton at 170 pounds by going 4-0 in matches for the day.

Weston Swise went 3-0 at 285 and Andrew Hedges was 3-1 at 152 before suffering a foot injury that could sideline him for a few weeks.

Trevor Hedges was 2-2 at 126 but one of his losses was to the No. 3-ranked wrestler in Illinois Class 3A.

Last Thursday Canton took wins against Metamora 66-12 and Morton 54-19 in a three-team meet.

Against Metamora the Little Giants Andrew Hedges (145), Wes Chaney (152) and Asa Reed all won by pins, Wyatt Sego (160) and Trevor Putman (220) won by decisions and Trevor Hedgtes (125), Nolan (170), Danny Murphy (182), Grant Kessler (195) and Jack Jochuma (106) took forfeit wins.

Against Morton, Isaiah Session (132), Andrew Hedges (145), Chaney (152) and Reed (285) posted pins, Sego (160) and Murphy (182) won by decisions and John Davis (120), Trevor Hedgtes (125), Putman, Jochums (106) and Brandon Eaton (113) took forfeits. Norton won by a technical fall.

The Little Giants will travel to Dunlap for a triangular that includes Limestone on Thursday and the girls team will compete at Pontiac on Friday.
