Chuck Harris fifth Butler player to enter transfer portal; Dawgs have holes to fill.

Butler's offseason of change has continued with junior guard Chuck Harris becoming the fifth Bulldog to enter the transfer portal since it opened officially on Monday.

Harris joins former teammates Myles Tate, Pierce Thomas, Myles Wilmoth and Jayden Taylor as Dawgs to leave the program. Harris is the second starter to transfer, though he had moved to a bench role after suffering a concussion against Seton Hall on Jan. 28.

Harris led Butler in scoring his freshman and sophomore seasons before finishing fourth (10.4 per game) this year behind Taylor (12.9), Simas Lukosuis (11.6) and Manny Bates (11.6). The 6-2 Virginia native had a three-game stretch against NC State, Kansas State and Tennessee Tech where he averaged 22.3 points, including a 32-point performance against Tech. Harris was selected to the Big East All-Freshman team in 2021, and he was the first freshman to lead the program in scoring since Tony Warren in 1979-80.

With Harris gone, Lukosius, D.J. Hughes, Connor Turnbull and John-Michael Mulloy are the only players in the program recruited by former coach LaVall Jordan. Butler now has four open scholarships for the 2023 season.

Butler and coach Thad Matta have been extremely active in the transfer portal. ESPN's Jeff Borzello reported Butler had a visit with former All-Ivy League guard Paxson Wojcik. Wojcik, a grad transfer, averaged 14.9 points per game at Brown while shooting 38% from 3 for his career. Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers reported Butler also visited with Wofford transfer B.J. Mack and Towson transfer Nick Timberlake.

Mack is a 6-8, 245-pound forward who averaged 16.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season. Timberlake is a 6-4 guard who averaged 17.7 points per game and shot 40% from 3 each of the past two seasons.

Butler has reportedly had contact with Central Michigan guard Reggie Bass (Tech High School), St. Francis (Pa.) guard Landon Moore and forward Josh Cohen, and former Notre Dame signee Brady Dunlap. Dunlap is a three-star forward from California.
