More information: August Bohlen, son of Marygrove College’s architect, was the architect of record for the chapel. Henry Brennan, father of Margaret (Benedicta) Brennan, IHM, was the builder.
“Notable features include the Art Deco terrazzo floor throughout. Working in three shifts, the novices kept the floor wet until it settled. As a result, it was laid perfectly,” the IHM Communications Department said.
The communion rail was constructed from hammered aluminum, copper and Rose Aurora marble. The doors are from the Black Forest of Bavaria; they have never had to be refurbished. The stations of the cross are made of solid bronze and sit on red Italian Verona marble pedestals.
The Casavant organ (Opus 1642) was built in 1940. It has 4,153 pipes and a set of 25 chimes and was specifically designed for the Motherhouse Chapel.
