Which churches in Eastern NC are leaving United Methodist conference over LGBTQ issues?

In November, the N.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church approved disaffiliation requests by 249 of its churches, clearing the way for those congregations to join the Global Methodist Church or some other denomination, or to become non-denominational.

Churches leaving the denomination say they are driven by a progressive movement among United Methodists in the United States, especially as it pertains to the church’s willingness to ordain gay and lesbian clergy members and conduct same-sex weddings. The Global Methodist Church, where many of the churches will be going, takes a more conservative view on LGBTQ issues.

The N.C Conference serves roughly half the state, from Alamance County east to the coast.

In the Western Conference, which covers the other half of North Carolina, 41 churches have disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church since 2019, and 16 more have begun the process.

More churches are expected to disaffiliate in both conferences across the state before the end of 2023.

Here are the churches in the eastern part of the state that have so far been approved to leave the denomination, listed alphabetically by city or town.
