CIF-SS playoffs roundup: Newbury Park beats Fillmore in soccer wild-card match
Philip Kleeman and Thomas Boungervino scored goals and Jesus Gonzalez and Dylan Roslauski shared the shutout in net to lift the Newbury Park High boys soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting Fillmore in a CIF-Southern Section Division 4 wild-card match Wednesday.
The Panthers will play at Crescenta Valley in a first-round match Friday.
Girls water polo
The Oaks Christian girls water polo team opened the playoffs with an 11-4 victory over host Mira Costa in a Division 1 first-round game. Ella Weigand finished with five goals and six steals, Matalene Winters scored three goals, and Colette O'Conner made 10 saves for the Lions.
Oaks Christian (14-9) will host Corona del Mar — a 13-9 winner over Schurr — in a quarterfinal game Saturday. Also playing Saturday will be Agoura, the top seed in Division 1. After a first-round bye, the Chargers (21-7) will host San Clemente — a 12-10 winner over Dos Pueblos at 2 p.m. Wednesday — in a quarterfinal game.
Ventura opened the Division 2 playoffs with a 10-5 win over visiting Santa Monica. Emily Ball and Ella Montano each scored three goals, Juliet Lazowski had two goals, Marty Pecht, Celia Young and Caelan Okinaga had goals, and Kiana Keller made 12 saves for the Cougars (22-6-1). Ventura will visit Glendora — a 14-7 winner over Sunny Hills — on Saturday in a quarterfinal game.
Boys basketball
The Ojai Valley School boys basketball team defeated Shandon 75-39 at Villanova Prep School in a Division 5A wild-card game. The Spuds (7-5) will play at top-seeded Fontana (20-5) in a first-round game Friday.
