CIF state swimming championships: Triple, double champs, plus Fresno-area standouts

Clovis West High junior Hannah Marinovich admitted that she couldn’t sleep Friday night because of the anticipation of competing for a state swimming title on Saturday.

“This meet has so much hype,” she said.

Hype indeed, especially in the event that she was competing in: the 100-yard breaststroke.

Marinovich, a junior, finished second with a time of 1 minute 74 seconds, just behind the top time of Sarah Bennetts of Davis (1:00.11) at the CIF swimming and diving state championships Saturday at the Clovis West Aquatics Center in Fresno.

Marinovich also was part of the Golden Eagles” 200 medley relay team, which finished eighth, but it was her place in the breaststroke that summed up the excitement of the day.

“It was insane,” she said. “and one of the best times and broke my team record, which was really exciting.”

Buchanan’s Olivia Sundgren, other locals place well

Buchanan High senior Olivia Sundgren had a simple game plan in the 500 freestyle: “To get out strong, keep up with the girls in my heat,” she said.

Sundgren did that as she was in the second, then slipped to third before finishing fourth with a time of 4:52.94.

Kathryn Hazel of University City was the winner in 4:46.25, finishing ahead of Kaitlin Lee of Dublin (4:50.65) and Samantha Hamilton of Wilson (4:52.72).

Ava Olson of Tulare placed fifth (4:53..16) and Alexa Wong of Coalinga sixth (4:54.97).

Sundgren said she hoped to finish with a better time than last season when she placed third in 4:51.73, but she’s still pleased with her outcome

“My goal was to go 4:50,” she said. “There was pretty fast girls in that heat. It was fun to race with them.”

Triple winner, state records set

Teagan O’Dell of Santa Margarita was a triple winner, finishing first in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and setting a new state mark in the 200 with her time of 1:53.38.

The old mark was in 2015, set by Ella Eastin of Crean Lutheran (1:54.31).

O’Dell, also part of her school’s winning 200 freestyle relay team, broke her state mark in the 100 back by clocking in at 50.96. She finished in 52.27 in 2022.

More double winners and records

Ethan Harrington of Palo Alto and Rex Maurer of Loyola-Los Angeles stood on the podium twice with gold medals.

Harrington finished first in the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 19.57 (breaking his state record, 19.85) and a record 42.92, respectively. The old record in the 100 was set by Alexei Sancov of Northgate in 2018 (43.09).
